Final piece from the "Playing It Straight" session

Modern life is stressful, especially for working professionals. Schedules, deadlines, client expectations, and overall demands compete to take your time, energy, and effectiveness.

Sit & Draw was created as a simple way to address these issues and reset a sense of balance by encouraging participants to let go of their “notification pinged” minds and enter into a state of flow through a primal act of collaborative mark making.

Cave drawings from our ancient forebears. Proof of the primal human impulse to create.

Sit & Draw aims to recapture a sense of our humanity through the very human act of making marks, as evidenced on the cave walls of Lascaux, France or the cliff walls of Australia and the Americas.

As civilization increasingly lurches into the digital realm, the practice and habit of working manually with real materials has evaporated, doodling in the margins has been lost.

Oil pastels on a blank sheet of paper

Each Sit & Draw session consists of a large sheet of paper, a set of mark making tools, and a theme set by the instructor. The theme could be formal, gamified, or simply a limited color palette. Having a theme allows participants to let their body and movements flow, marking as they wish, while ensuring a cohesive final work of co-creation that feels planned and deliberate.

Sit & Draw can be compared to other kinds of calming wellness programmes, e.g. yoga, meditation, etc., but it differs in a few ways.

  • Sit & Draw provides an easy onramp to make new connections and friends as participants work in a group setting.
  •  Participants work in tandem with those around them to create a whole piece.
  • Drawing skills are not required, only active participation.
  • There is no need for special clothing or equipment.
  • In addition to participants feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, there is a fully realized visual artifact at the end of the session.
  • By taking time to unplug through drawing, participants should re-enter their daily lives with renewed energy and focus.
  • In this era where A.I. is beginning to eat away at large chunks of human expertise, Sit & Draw plants its flag, celebrating and exploring our human capacity and capabilities for creation.
  • Sit & Draw is perfect for company team-building and workshops.
